The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Friday arrested a bus driver allegedly involved in supplying arms to the city from Mardan and seized arms from him.
SSP Mohammed Aslam Khan of the CID Sindh said that on a tip-off that an owner of the inter-city bus service was involved in supplying arms to banned outfits, they signaled a bus (EP-9524) coming from Mardan at Banaras Chowk, but the driver accelerated the vehicle. The SSP said that the police chased the bus and intercepted it and took the driver into custody.
During the search of the bus, the police found two bags containing arms, including three Kalashnikovs, two repeaters, two rifles-222, two rifles-7mm, 10 TT pistols, 500 bullets of KK and 300 bullets of TT pistols.
The bus driver, identified as Mohammed Akber Khan, who was also the owner of the bus, was taken to the investigation unit, where he disclosed that after purchasing his own bus, he started bus service from Mardan to Karachi.
He told the investigators that during the period, he met one, Islam, a notorious arms trader, who used to supply arms to Karachi and other parts of the city.
He said that Islam instigated him to supply his arms from Mardan to Karachi in his bus.
The accused said that he used to take a fare of Rs20,000 from Islam for per delivery of the arms at the given place in Karachi. He told the investigators that the arms were supposed to be delivered to one, Jabbar, who had allegedly been running his den in the Banaras area. The accused said that Jabbar further supplied the delivered arms to the banned outfits in Karachi. Khan further disclosed that they used to sell KK at Rs0.1 million and TT pistols at Rs30,000.
The police official said that the raided the den of Jabbar but he escaped. However, a team has been constituted for his arrest, the SSP said. Further probe is under way.
