Dr. Imran Farooq laid to rest

KARACHI: MQM leader Dr. Imram Farooq, who was stabbed to death outside his house in London on September 17, 2010, was laid to rest at a local graveyard in Karachi amid moving scenes.

Senior party’s leaders and thousands of MQM activists and supporters attended his funeral procession held at Jinnah Ground in Yasinabad.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Farooq’s body was escorted to his residence in Sharifabad from Karachi airport amid tight security.

Governor Ishratul Ebad, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Babar Ghauri and Wasim Akhtar received the body at the airport.

Stringent security measures have been taken in the metropolis on this occasion.

Police officials say that more than 5, 000 security personnel and specialist shooters have been stationed across the city.

The city is wearing a deserted look as both public and private vehicles remain off the roads.

Dr Farooq, a founding member of the MQM, also served as the party’s only convener
