Murder sectarian in nature: probe team

Karachi

The probe team investigating the murder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) Raza Haider on Tuesday inspected the scene of crime in Nazimabad No 2, with the initial probe report stating that the incident was a case of sectarian killing.

Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Chief SSP Raja Omer Khattab told The News that the probe team and some other senior officers, including SP Liaquatabad Town Waqar Malan, visited the scene of crime, and after recording eyewitnesses accounts, managed to prepare a sketch of the suspects.

As per the initial investigation, the deceased had come to the house of a close friend, Malik Zaman, to offer condolences over the death of his mother. The MPA’s family and two guards were accompanying him on the visit, the SSP said.

After consoling with the family, Haider had sent his family home along with a police guard, while he stayed with his friend to offer prayers at the Jamia Masjid, which is situated in close proximity to Zaman’s house. His gunman, Police Constable Khalid, was also present with him.

In the meantime, five armed men riding two motorcycles stopped their motorcycles in front of the mosque, shot and killed PC Khalid, snatched his repeater and chased after Haider, the SSP narrated.

Haider was standing some 20 meters away from PC Khalid, and immediately ran inside the mosque to seek shelter. The deceased headed to the place for ablution, thinking that he could escape to the other side of the road from a small exit on the rear side of the mosque. However, before he could make good his escape, he was shot dead by the terrorists. After killing Haider, the assailants fled from the same small gate, the SSP said.
