Low-lying areas infested with rats, snakes

Rawalpindi

A large number of rats, cats, dogs and poisonous reptiles and insects including snakes have crept into low-lying localities following recent floods in Rawalpindi and adjoining areas.

Talking to ‘The News’ a number of residents of low-lying areas said that after the last week rains and flood in Nullah Leh a large number of rats, snakes, cats and dogs entered their areas, and they have started creeping into the houses and are creating serious problems for the locals. They also said that carcases of dead animals are also floating in the Leh, which are creating stench in the area.

Deputy District Officer (Health) Dr. Shahzad Ahmed also admitted that rats and other animals in large number have entered the low-lying residential areas with the floodwater. He said that teams have been formed for fogging in low-lying areas.

He said, “We have started fogging in Pirwadhai, Khayaban-e-Sir Syed, Bagh Sardaran and along all nullahs to kill rats, cats, dogs and other insects.”

Rawal Town Administrator Talat Mahmood Gondal said, “We have started fogging campaign in the city areas to kill dangerous insects and reptiles.” Rats and other animals have stormed the city nullahs during flood. “But Rawal Town Administration with the full cooperation of District Health Department has started fogging to kill these animals,” he added.

Deputy Medical Superintendent of District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Dr. Zafar Mehmood warned people to adopt measures to stop entry of rats and other dangerous insects and reptiles entering their homes.

The residents settled in low-lying areas told ‘The News’, “We are living with rats, cats, dogs and dangerous animals. And sometime snakes enter our homes. But concerned authorities are not paying heed to address the situation.”

Shahzia Akhtar, a resident of Arya Mohalla, said that rats, snakes, cats and dogs were freely roaming in our houses. “In past, concerned departments use to take lots of steps to kill these animals, but unfortunately no concerned authorities have visited our locality to start fogging during this monsoon season,” she added.
